Building Confidence in Business

May 18, 2022

Do you know anyone who sometimes feels like they just don't have the bold confidence necessary to succeed in business? Maybe they need a boost in their business or professional confidence, or maybe they are just getting started and need some extra confidence to take that first step. If you’d like to be helpful, share these tips for building confidence in business.

Get Educated

One of the most important confidence-builders is knowing that you know what you know! You may have a lot of great business ideas but you don't have the know-how to make it happen. Educate yourself about what it takes to be considered an Expert or Thought Leader in your field. What type of knowledge do those who are successful hold? How can you obtain that information? What kinds of experiences can you create for yourself?

You may need some nuts-and-bolts education, too - for example, you may need some practical knowledge to help you reach your goals.

There are many ways to educate yourself in business. You can hire a business coach to help you one-on-one. You can also download eBooks, sign up for boards and forums where business-savvy people congregate, and ask questions of successful people or take courses. You can also join associations that specialize in the area you work in.  There are so many options available!

Get Focused

Getting educated is key to getting focused. You really can't boldly march forward if you don't know what direction you're going in. Take some time to focus on your profession. What, exactly, are you doing? What do you want to do? Who is your target role or idea of success?

If you have diverse interests, this can be difficult - but it's even more necessary, because diverse interests can be distracting if you don't focus on one at a time. So once you get yourself educated about your strengths and what you want to do, you can focus on expanding your knowledge in that area. Take advantage of strengths assessments to learn more about your natural abilities and your preference. People tend to think that work has to be hard so they look to challenge themselves. While a dose of challenge is necessary for growth, remember that your natural gifts will serve you best. What are you already good at? What do you enjoy doing so much that you would do it for free? Your answers to these questions will bring you closer to figuring things out.  In other words, take what you are already pretty good at, and work toward "expertising" those skills.

Don't Compare Yourself to Others

We all know that businessman or woman - the one who has written ten books, has a dozen jobs, and has a perfect house, and spouse and kids. You may not be that kind of person, and such a schedule and goals are likely just not realistic for you. It's really not advantageous to compare ourselves to others. Set your own realistic standards and compare your progress against those. From an Aligned perspective, being better than the person you were in the past is the best approach. Everyone is on a unique path. What seems perfect on the outside (1) has nothing to do with you and (2) may not be the right path for you. To operate as the best version of yourself, focus on your own goals. That’s always the answer!

Believe in Your Success

A lot of people swear by the power of positive thinking. It is said that visualizing your goals can attract the very things you need to reach your goals. Even if you don't get into the visualization bit, you can benefit from believing in your own career and your own competence.

Here’s the key to gaining confidence from a place of Alignment: Take on a new skill, learn how to become good at it and you will notice your confidence increase in that area.  And only share your plans and successes with people who earn the right to hear it.  It’s really that simple.

Once you get confident, you will be much more likely to attract good situations, which in turn will boost your confidence even more. It's a great cycle to get into.
